Pop that color

Everyone needs a little color in their lives. When Kristina of Pretty Shiny Sparkly announced the new bloggers do it better, I thought "Oh no!" All the rules said were.... RED.

I love color, and I am really trying to branch out but red is just not one of those colors I have a lot of. I did some major retail therapy with one of my favorite people this weekend and found my perfect combo.

I love pops of color. I think it brightens up any outfit, so when I was wearing my favorite red scarf this weekend, I knew that's the look I was going for. Something fun, something totally me, that still had colors, patterns, things to make me step out of my comfort zone.

When I saw this Urban Outfitters dress, I knew it was perfectly me. I added the little red belt for that extra pop and the look was complete :)

Sequins, Sparkle & Shine

Around the Holidays, I always say you need to have the 3 S's in your life: sequins, sparkle and shine. The holidays are filled with all three, whether it's your Christmas tree filled with lights and ornaments, or that beautifully wrapped present, the three S's are everywhere and you always need to add a little, or a lot, to your wardrobe for those holiday get togethers!

I had emailed Kristina a while back about maybe doing a BDIB with sequins. The fashionista that she is, she said she loved my idea but she was working on it for an upcoming BDIB! Great minds think a like ;)

Christmas wish list: Eco-friendly dyed denim

Dyed denim is a hot commodity this winter as stores fill their denim rooms with everything from electric blues to pink hues.

While dyed denim is all the rage, dye processes can be harmful to the earth. As Christmas inches closer, I've put together a list of some great eco-friendly jean companies that are working hard to eliminate our carbon footprint left behind while keeping you looking eco-chic!

M2F

M2F denim comes in a wide range of styles and colors. This fall they have even introduced vests and jackets into the mix. Using Made2Fade yarn technology, that is certified free of harmful substances, these jeans are individually colored in a dye bath. The vintage-inspired jeans run about $130 and can be purchased from retailers everywhere.

James Jeans

James Jeans uses organic cotton and a unique dry aging process to create the perfect “worn” look. The mainstream denim runs anywhere from about $120-220 and can be found at places like Barney’s, Shopbop, and the James Jeans website.

Missoni launches budget friendly line for good cause

Target first, OrphanAid next!

Designer Margherita Maccapani Missoni has partnered up with Orphan Aid Africa creating a 12-piece knitwear collection with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the organization's aid in finding homes for orphans and abandoned children in Ghana.

The organization, based in California, is a non-profit organization founded by former Vogue editor and author Lisa Lovatt-Smith in Ghana in 2002 with outlets in Europe. The mission is:

"To support orphans and vulnerable children in Ghana through programs in care reform, education, and development. Our goal is to ensure that children grow up in safe and permanent family settings with appropriate care and protection."

With one of the outlets being Italy, Missioni has already collaborated with the organization to help fund efforts so it was a no brainer to create a line dedicated to raising money and awareness about the organization.

The collection will include pieces sprinkled with the label's famous zigzag pattern in pink and red tones.

"Pink is symbolic, it refers to childhood, and red to Africa, and together they were aesthetically pleasing,” Missioni tells WWD. “The pattern in itself is something that is ours, that belongs to us.”

The budget friendly M Missoni OrphanAid Africa Collection will launch in M Missioni stores November 16.

No Shave, November!

Movember, formally known as November, is all about bringing awareness to men's health, particularly prostate cancer. The month long moustache growing charity event is a global movement, stemming from Melbourne, Australia. Men aka Mo Bros are encouraged to grow out facial hair and sport their "Mos"(moustaches) to spark conversations and create awareness.

TOMS is one of the many supporters of Movember, launching a limited-edition "Movember" line to shine the spotlight on cancers affecting men. Embroidered on the side, the Mo is the signature for the shoes. Styles were created for both men and women to show support.

Proceeds from the shoes will go to the Movember foundation.

The Movember movement becomes bigger each year as the campaign increasingly becomes more popular. In 2010 the U.S. campaign had over 64,000 "Mo Bros and Sistas" jump on the bandwagon, raising $7.5 million while globally the campaign brought in over $80.5 million.

Programs that are funded by the Movemeber movement include, the Prostate Cancer Foundation, LIVESTRONG, and creating awareness and education. The more information shared with men helps to break stigmas and alter mind-sets to create an understanding of how important it is to get yourself checked out. While the light is being shined on these important issues, men across the world continue to ignore signs, increasing their chances of poor health.

So guys go out and sport your "Mo" to show your support and help bring awareness to men's health and the Movemeber movement!

Zombies, Lmfao, and honey badgers OH MY!

First off, HAPPY HALLOWEEN! I hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween weekend, filled with ghouls, thrills and fun! This year I had to take it easy because I injured myself and have a boot on my foot and crutches as my accessory BUT I made it work!

While I couldn't be more elaborate with my costume, my boyfriend knew exactly what he wanted to be and I took the reigns on styling his look!

Check out this years funky costumes, can you guess what we were?

My babe was the guys from LMFAO while a I was a little elephant, my favorite animal!

We took it easy going to a house party with lots of friends. One of my best friends showed up as the awesome Honey Badger and of course some of our friends rocked the zombie look!

This year I wasn't able to go all out but the last two years were definitely my favorite costumes! Here's a look back on Miss J. Cookie and I'm on a boat!

Sarasota Fashion Week

The first ever Sarasota Fashion Week kicked off yesterday as volunteers, designers, press and guests mingled the night away. While tonight was the sponsorship appreciation party, tomorrow is the beginning of four days filled with runways, models, and the latest fashions.

As a volunteer I am thrilled to be apart of this exciting time for Sarasota's up and coming fashion scene.

The Style Swap, which is tomorrow from 9a-1p, is the main event I will be volunteering for, as I am so excited to be apart of it! It's a great way to be eco friendly and still get some really cute pieces to spice up your wardrobe. There will be DIY workshops on how to turn a t-shirt into a necklace, purse or scarf, the actual swap, where all swapaholics discover new, fabulous finds, and last but certainly not least, a style showcase where local fashion influencers will show off outfits created right there at the swap! So bring out your gently used clothes, jewelry, shoes, etc and swap your hearts out.

**Ticket price $10 at the door. Proceeds Benefit the Backroom School of Film & Art 501c3

Review of Sally Hansen's Salon Effects: Kitty Kitty

As I have confessed, I have a slight obsession with all things leopard. I've kept it hush hush for the most part, but this fall the trend has exploded and so has my collection of pieces! About two weeks ago I even participated in the newest bloggers do it better assignment, Animal Instincts, (my favorite one yet), showing my wild side in all things leopard print.

I have been debating on buying the stick on nail strips but I couldn't resist any longer. I recently purchased the fun nail polish strips and in 10 minutes the look was complete.

Sorry for the backwardness, I took it with Photo booth :)

The pack comes with 16 strips in two sealed cases, so I figured ok, one for each finger including the thumb would leave me with 6 left over BUT, I tried to carefully file off the excess so I could use the other side for my other hand (if you have longer finger nails it might not work, but I keep them pretty short so it was perfect!). I alternated, right finger, left finger, and so on.

**I am right handed so I knew it would be easy to do my left hand, that's
why I suggest starting with your dominant hand, in case you need help
putting the pieces on.

**Sometimes it's not the same fit so you will have to use another strip,
but I only had that problem once.

I have only had them on for a day but they have held up well and look awesome! I'm loving this manicured look.

The patterns and colors they have are SO fun and they even have a halloween collection now. The best part, they're immediately dry!

So if you're looking for a great alternative to dress up your nails, these polish strips are great. For 10$ a pack, I've got two manicures in 1! And while some people might not be able to use the strip for two nails, you still have a super cute look!

Animal Instincts: Meow

So I kind of have a secret obsession with leopard print. When I found out the new Bloggers Do It Better challenge was titled "Animal Instincts"I literally eeeeeee'ed with excitement.

With the animal prints being so popular this fall, I have made a few purchases that make me oh so happy. A few months ago, while writing my trend post, The Cat's Meow, I found the "leopard on me" top from ModCloth, and I HAD to have it. After patiently waiting for it to become available again, I snatched it up at the end of September. September 27th, the day that little package arrived on my doorstep, was one happy day for me! The next morning I woke up to a new BDIB email announcing the new assignment and I was SO excited to participate! It was meant to be :)

So without further adieu, meet the animal in me.

Two days after the new BDIB I found this precious little skirt with leopard bows and wallah! I had my outfit. While it's a little crazy for me, there is just something about this outfit that makes me feel good! It's bringing out my inner feistiness that I normally don't show!

Needless to say, I really do love leopard print. I have a few pieces that just spice up an outfit.

And I just had to include my little precious bug, Tika because like mother like daughter, she loves leopard too ♥

Mocking model wins popular vote but doesn't win over American Apparel

Nancy Upton was one of about a thousand women who entered American Apparel's newest contest, but she was probably the ONLY one who entered hoping not to win.

AA is no stranger to controversy but this time they've opened up a whole new can of worms. The company created a photo contest trying to find "The Next BIG Thing"(which it was conveniently titled) to show off their new "extended sizes." It was geared toward finding a plus-size model, size 12-14, based on votes from visitors.

Here is part of the description from the contest:

"If you think you’ve got what it takes to be the next XLent model, send us photos of you and your junk to back it up."

Upton, was annoyed by the campaign's tone, feeling as though she was being talked down to for her size. "The puns, the insulting, giggly tones, and the over-used euphemisms for fat that were scattered throughout the campaign’s solicitation began to crystalize an opinion in my mind," Upton said. So she did something about it. Upton recruited a photographer friend, Shannon Skloss to take photos protesting the new contest. The size 12, 24-year-old, uploaded her photos, never expecting to win, just hoping to create awareness.

She took the pictures to mock the contest and she shares how she would never model for American Apparel on her blog Extra Wiggle Room, dedicated to her journey with AA and aftermath:

'I most certainly would not model for American Apparel, because (pretty obviously) I don’t agree with their business practices. I also would not expect to be asked to do so, even if I receive a majority of the votes (something I never planned on).'

She goes on to write how she disagrees with the message AA is sending but she respects others opinions.

Here is Upton's description of the blog:

"MY NAME IS NANCY UPTON. I'M A SIZE 12 AND WANTED TO SHOW AMERICAN APPAREL MY FRESH FACE (AND FULL FIGURE). MY GOOD FRIEND SHANNON SKLOSS CAME OVER TO TAKE SOME "BOOTY-FUL" PHOTOS OF ME...BUT I JUST COULDN'T STOP EATING.

I CAME IN FIRST PLACE IN THE AA 'NEXT BIG THING' CONTEST, BUT WON'T BE MODELING FOR THE COMPANY ANY TIME SOON."

As the company learned of Upton's antics and her angle on the contest, AA's Iris Alonzo fired back. (Here is a a few pieces of the 7 paragraph letter to show the response)

"It’s a shame that your project attempts to discredit the positive intentions of our challenge based on your personal distaste for our use of light-hearted language, and that “bootylicous” was too much for you to handle. While we may be a bit TOO inspired by Beyoncé, and do have a tendency to occasionally go pun-crazy, we try not to take ourselves too seriously around here. I wonder if you had taken just a moment to imagine that this campaign could actually be well intentioned, and that my team and I are not out to offend and insult women, would you have still behaved in the same way, mocking the confident and excited participants who put themselves out there? "

"Oh - and regarding winning the contest, while you were clearly the popular choice, we have decided to award the prizes to other contestants that we feel truly exemplify the idea of beauty inside and out, and whom we will be proud to have representing our company."

Trying to take a stand against the contest, Upton's dream became a reality. She has now caused an international discussion, bringing the problem of plus-sized women and the media to a forefront.

and the list goes on....

While many people are siding with her, there are those who just don't agree and that is why this controversy has become such a heated debate.

"I feel like I accomplished what I set out to do on a greater scale than I realized I was doing,” Upton said. “I've provoked discussion and promoted awareness about the depiction of plus-size women in the media."

With all the media buzz and controversy that has stirred up, Upton and AA have reached an agreement to fly her and photographer friend Skloss to American Apparel in L.A. They will be able to see what the company is like and she is allowed to write about whatever she sees.

You run around like crazy from place to place and your schedule may seem never ending. I don’t know about you, but I tend to ask myself… How can I top last September? It’s a month for makeovers! One upside to working in retail is you always get to see the trends of each upcoming season. As co-manager of my store, I am in charge of brand merchandising and right now our focus is animal prints and flare jeans. This fall, everything from shirts, to scarfs, shoes, to accessories, are covered in animal prints, especially leopard.

Here is a collage of just some of the pieces you might want to have in your closet this fall. Meow.

Depending on your style, you can do a lot of animal print or just spice up a classic look with a belt on the wild side but either way this fall you should definitely grab at least one piece to stay stylish on your own catwalk!

Seeing red

Red soles are officially NOT just Christian Louboutin’s staple anymore.

In a New York court room the bitter battle between Christian Louboutin and Yves Saint Laurent took place. Louboutin accused YSL of trademark infringement in April.

US District Judge Victor Marrero denied a request by Louboutin for a preliminary injunction against YSL’s red soles. In his ruling, Marrero hinted that Louboutin cannot prevent others from using red soles, even though it’s a signature part of the designs, it’s not the sole (excuse the pun) reason the brand is well-known.

“Because in the fashion industry color serves ornamental and aesthetic functions vital to robust competition, the court finds that Louboutin is unlikely to be able to prove that its red outsole brand is entitled to trademark protection.”

In 2008, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted Louboutin a registered trademark for the red soles. Louboutin is seeking more than $1 million dollars in damages for the alleged infringement, claiming he was the first designer to create red soles for women’s shoes.

Arm candy: BDIB

I wasn't going to participate in this bloggers do it better but after seeing all the great posts, I was inspired.

This BDIB, Arm Party, was really hard for me. I have my two normal cuffs that I love to wear, one silver and one antique gold, and that's about it. I wear necklaces and earrings to accessorize as well so I don't have a lot of bracelets.

It's funny that this was the BDIB because I have been looking for a nice watch to wear because I like the look but I just haven't found that perfect watch yet. This post has definitely inspired me to keep looking until I find the right one :)

Demi Moore's newest role

A prominent memory in her teen life and shopping experience, Demi Moore is now the new face of Ann Taylor.

Ads for the new fall campaign will be revealed in September issues. Moore is excited about the new endeavor.

BDIB: Maxed out on style

When Kirstina, of PSS announced the fifth bloggers do it better assignment I was so excited! It is a piece you can find in almost any store right now and so versatile. It is also right up my alley when it comes to personal style.

Here is my take on the BDIB assignment #5, THE MAXI.

I am all about maxi skirts and dresses, in fact, I used a maxi dress for another BDIB assignment. They just exude a boho vibe but still look chic and I like to spice them up with accessories and belts.

Once I read the challenge the thought of making it a "high-waisted" maxi skirt immediately entered my mind and I was on a mission to find the perfect one.

Working full-time at Express, I don't get a lot of free time. With my vacation time starting Friday I was afraid I wouldn't be able to participate in this BDIB because I was scheduled to close all week, so it would be too late for pictures BUT when someone needed to switch shifts, I jumped on the chance becuase I really wanted to do this challenge.

On Monday, I worked 9-6 and headed out with my wonderful boyfriend to take pictures.

From the shirt to the skirt, even the sandals, this whole outfit is Express so it was an easy to transition from work to "play".

I had a ton of compliments on the outfit and even sold the maxi skirt because a customer liked the look!

I love this outfit because it is totally me. A little bit of boho mixed in with a chic, cool look.

This last photo I kind of love. In the middle of the challenge I wanted to take a photo with my boyfriend because the background was beautiful. We set the self-timer and this is what came out. ♥

Baby, you're a firework

I hope everyone had a great fourth of July!

I enjoyed a day filled with fun, adventure and love. Working over 40 hours a week, I don't get to see friends or my boyfriend a lot so I treasure the time I do spend with them. Luckily, I had the 4th off so the boyfriend and I took a drive up to Cheesecake Factory where we met some friends and had a wonderful time. Once we got back to Sarasota, we enjoyed the night at Marina Jacks, where there was a firework display. It was a great day with wonderful people.

New policy against photoshop in advertising.

The American Medical Association adopted a new policy for body image and advertising to youth.

In the annual meeting, the AMA noted that “Advertisers commonly alter photographs to enhance the appearance of models’ bodies, and such alterations can contribute to unrealistic expectations of appropriate body image – especially among impressionable children and adolescents. ” The unrealistic expectations could then lead to disorders and other health problems.

In the press release, AMA Board Member Barbara L. McAneny, MD mentioned how ads that reach out to impressionable children and teens need to stop portraying models with body types only achievable with photo editing. She pointed out one specific example. ”The appearance of advertisements with extremely altered models can create unrealistic expectations of appropriate body image. In one image, a model’s waist was slimmed so severely, her head appeared to be wider than her waist.”

The adopted policy is to encourage advertisers to work with organizations involved in child and adolescent health to create guidelines for ads, especially in teen-oriented publications. The guidelines would discourage altering photos that could promote unrealistic body image expectations.

I have been super busy with work so I haven't had a lot of time for my neon and neutral BDIB assignment.

Over the weekend I went to Miami where I had one of the most amazing weekends of my life with friends I will never forget. So, I thought "why not shoot some photos in South Beach," after all, it is the place where Neon comes to die.

So without further adieu here is my weekend in Miami sporting a neon with neutral.

Fashion Feature: Miami Vice

I took a little hiatus over the weekend, but now I am back to featuring my fabulous fashionable friends.

This next feature is probably the one to make me most proud. Two years ago Miranda and I rekindled our friendship and it has been nothing short of amazing ever since. She had just moved back after graduating college and was a little lost, not knowing too many people or having much to do. We began hanging out a lot and I taught her the tricks of the trade on how to dress. Being a Fashion Expert at the time for Express, I had learned a lot on how to style people. I knew who she was so I was quickly able to bring her personality out more and show her how to dress her body.

Over the last couple of years she has become my little protégé and I am so proud to say she has become a style star. Her style has evolved so much, and she presents herself so well through it. So without further adieu....

Meet Miranda.

Going to school in Miami, Miranda found her style, she just needed to let it shine. Leaning toward the whole Miami vibe, she loves colors, blazers and heels. Sophisticated, chic is the way I would describe her style.

❝My inspiration for this outfit was to be Miami Chic. Something I could wear day or night while wandering around SoBe. Miami is all about bright and fresh colors, so the dress I thought was perfect with the striking pink and the ruffles for a feminine touch. I am all about sporting blazers, it's probably my signature wardrobe item. I love that by wearing it, I can dress anything up or down. The white blazer felt very clean and fresh to pair with my fedora. I wanted to be true to the Latin Caribbean culture Miami exudes and I think I was able to find that happy balance with this outfit.❞

Fashion Feature: Polka dot with me

As I continue my week long feature of my wonderfully fashionable friends I come to Carrie. She was my teacher my last semester of college but she was more than that. The young, vibrant fashionista always had a chic style walking into the classroom. We would swap style stories and comment on bad fashion. We ultimately became friends through it all and now, even though I graduated, we keep in touch, especially when it comes to fashion.

Meet Carrie.

As one of the editors in charge of the school newspaper, Carrie helped out a lot. Though I never met her until my last semester, she was one of the people that gave me the go ahead to start the fashion column for Flagler. Once I was in her class, she gave me great positive feedback, letting me know that the way I wrote worked, and I would (hopefully) go far with my writing.

After graduating, we would trade emails here and there about fashion and before I knew had started her blog, Under $50 Fashion. This is such a great resource on how to look cute at a low cost. A definite must visit blog.

This outfit was a recent post on her blog where the total cost was only $45.95! And even better, the skirt was a DIY project.

Meet Preeti, she's the one with the afro!

This adorable, yet groovy, fashionista is one of my oldest and dearest friends. Preeti and I have known each other for almost twenty years. We have seen each other go through fashion highs and lows, but I can safely say she has the cutest style. Her style matches her laid back, outgoing personality.

Preeti's outfit choice is so cute. She chose one focal point, the scarf, and toned down the rest of her outfit so the scarf could scream fabulous.

❝Okay so my outfit is very "me" (according to my boyfriend). I am wearing Jeggings from Old Navy (the most comfortable things invented) and a piece that is a staple in my wardrobe. Fashion Features: Fedora Flair

I have so many wonderful friends who are into fashion, so I thought, "Why not feature them!" I am excited to introduce some of the fabulous fashionistas I call friends.

Meet Erica.

This outgoing shoe lover has a unique style that revolves around her enormous, not to mention fabulous, shoe collection. With more than sixty pairs of shoes, she usually puts an outfit together by choosing from her wide assortment of styles and colors.

However, this time, it wasn't all about the shoes for this fashionista. Erica was inspired by another stylish accessory, the fedora.

❝I was really inspired when I saw the fedora. To me, it has a vintage mood about it. I knew I wanted a menswear influenced look so I paired it with a black vest and my beloved BCBG pinstripped pumps. I cuffed my jeans to flow with the vintage ambience of the fedora. Plus I just love the look of cuffed jeans. I threw on a delightful new modcloth.com purchase called The Tools of the Trade necklace, which I feel adds to the tomboy vibe. I love this look because of the eclectic nature of it, I feel uniquely me in it. I've never really loved patterns so I stuck with solid colors to stay true to my style. That's also why I went with a dark wash skinny jeans. 9 out of 10 times thats what I'm wearing! Additionally I love the versitality of this outfit. You could pair it with a million different shoes and color combos to create a completely transformed look!❞ - Erica C.

My first Blogger's do it better assignment, White Stripes, went off without a hitch! I LOVED the "white out" theme. I was so eager to see what Kristina, the creator of Pretty Shiny Sparkly, would come up with next.

This assisngment was WAY harder for me to create a look for. My style is more boho chic than anything so when I read the challenge, Prep School, I thought uh-oh! After recruiting my friend Miranda to participate, and borrowing a tie from one of my favorite fashionisto's, Dave, the outfit and look was complete.

So without further adieu, welcome to....

I knew I wanted plaid in my outfit. It's a staple in any prepster's wardrobe so my friend and co-manager Dave brought in a few for me to pick from. I chose this pink, yellow, white, green and navy blue plaid tie and from that single piece, my outfit was created. He also lent me a belt, matching pretty closely to the plaid in the tie.

Miranda was intrigued by the challenge. We met up on Tuesday to discuss options and she sent me picture texts for opinions of "preppy." Low and behold, two days later, she conquered the look fabulously. She had forgot a tie so she cleverly took her pearl necklace and made it into one.

To create The Academy look we researched different trends and styles that fit into the "American Prep" category. Our outfits ended up becoming a mixture of Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger with just a little bit of edge.

While this assignment was more challenging, it was still really fun to participate. I had a wonderful time planning my outfit as well as helping Miranda put hers altogether. In the end, being a prep really isn't all that bad ;)

The Blogger's do it better movement has been an exciting new thing to look forward to. I can't wait until the next assignment!

White stripes....

I am really excited to do my first post for "Bloggers Do It Better." This is a new movement of amazing fashion forward bloggers who are given an assignment from creator and blogger, Pretty Shiny Sparkly, to complete, stylishly with their own unique twist on the project.

This week's challenge is "White Out." Working in retail, I get to see the latest "IT" trends and white is DEFINITELY the trend of the moment. I chose a boho chic look with a trendy twist. Maxi dresses and skirts are my personal favorite trend right now so I wanted to focus my attention around this precious striped dress from Forever 21.

I wanted to funk it up by using another favorite color trend, camel, as accessories with gold undertones.

As soon as I heard the look was white I knew immediately I wanted to take pictures at the beach. What better place to take pictures, in a white outfit, then at the beach where the sand is powder white? It was the perfect backdrop.

This was a really fun assignment. It inspired me to show off my style a little more. I am usually not a fashion blogger who likes to blog about her personal style but this new group has given me more confidence to share my looks.

Perfect choice for a stunning princess....

Kate Middleton, now formally known as Princess Catherine, looked absolutely breathtaking in her Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen royal wedding gown. Her Style has always been simplistically chic yet stunning, with her natural beauty taking front stage.

Princess Catherine opted out on getting her make-up done, as she wanted to do her own so she would look like herself according to E!

Her gown was the perfect choice for a princess to be. The dress was specially made for the princess with intricate English and French Chantilly handmade lace applique sleeves, as well as over the ivory bodice. The Royal School of Needlework crafted both as well as the gorgeous veil.The skirt was made of silk and satin and had a 10-foot train according to E!

Her sister and MOH, Pippa was also stunning in Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. Both sisters looked absolutely lovely in their McQueen gowns.

As Kate arrived at the alter, Prince William whispered, "You look beautiful," to his future wife.

Get up, Stand up!

After an 18-year old girl was raped by her driving instructor in Italy, she ultimately paid the price.

In 1999, the instructor was convicted and sentenced to jail but he appealed his sentence and made it to the Italian Supreme Court. After learning the victim was wearing jeans, the case was overturned with the Chief Judge stating, "because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape but consensual sex."

After being outraged by the verdict, women in the Parliament protested by wearing jeans to work and it soon motivated others to stand up and fight for what they believe. Denim Day in L.A. is one of the many events to acknowledge and support the world wide protest of the court ruling. The day is about preventing sexual violence. The campaign was created to educate and take a stand against rape.

April is sexual assault awareness month and "Denim Day" has become an internationally known day of protest against the outrageous court ruling. With millions of women and men being affected by rape each year, the day is practiced by schools, businesses, organizations and individuals.

Here are some stats:

❤ One in six American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape. -denimdayinla.org/

❤ In 2008, victims age 12 or older experienced a total of 203,830 rapes or sexual assaults. -

While doing research, I found that Denim Day has different dates but all seem to be in April. Denim Day in L.A. is April 27th with another big event happening April 28th. So if you or a friend has fallen victim to rape or sexual assault, participate and take a stand against sexual violence!

I want to see your peacock

Peacocks have become the inspiration for a lot of fashion designers and clothing stores. The beautiful bird has become a mass trend for accessories and clothing. Symbolizing qualities like kindness, patience good fortune, watchfulness, guidance, and holiness, the peacock has become a favorite in the fashion industry.

Last weekend was my birthday. I chose to do a masquerade theme, and let me tell you, it turned out better than I expected.

It was the first year that I was able to celebrate with no group projects, upcoming finals, or school getting in the way, so I wanted to go all out. A friend and I came up with the idea of "masquerade madness" about a month and a half ago and being a peacock lover I immediately knew what I wanted to do....

My dad brought me a mask from Mardi Gras and the outfit began.

The details and colors were perfect for the peacock inspired idea.

I found a costume online that inspired the rest of my look.

It was perfect. I showed my mom and she helped recreate the look.

Here are a few ways to recreate this costume:

♔Find a one piece bathing suit and nylon netting to make your own tutu inspired skirt. Add peacock feathers and intense purples, teals, and blues to your eye makeup and waaalaah!

♔Find a leotard and a black tutu for a ballerina inspired peacock look. Once again find some feathers and place them where you would like. Spice it up with some teal shoes for an extra peacock flare.

♔Find a LBD, and skip the skirt. <----- This is what I ended up doing. My mom and I had every intention to make a skirt, and we did, but since I bought the dress first the skirt didn't work. **If you decide to do a dress, the tutu/skirt might not look right, so beware.**Once we had the dress, we gathered a bunch of peacock feathers together to create a fan-like shape to pin to the dress.

I found some gorgeous peacock earrings and the look was complete. I added false lashes, teals, deep blues and purples to my eyes to spice up the look.

Photo manipulation has become an epidemic in the photography world, even camera companies are jumping onto the bandwagon. Everyone from Time Magazine to Allure, have been accused of manipulating photos to please the consumers. Fashion magazines are continually getting flack for it. Some have even been under fire with the celebrity or model who was retouched like Crystal Renn. The gorgeous model was outraged when her photos came out for Fashion For Passion's tee shirt shoot. In an interview with Glamour, Renn told the mag she was upset."Well, I was shocked. When I saw the pictures, I think I was silent for a good five minutes, staring with my mouth open. I don’t know what was done to those photos or who did it, but they look retouched to me. And listen, everybody retouches, but don’t make me into something I’m not," Renn Said.

Photo manipulation can be as little as changing the image’s color to big things like hiding bruises or taking away cellulite. An article from the Art Institute’s AiInsite.com website, Picture Imperfect- Digital Image Manipulation Ethics, says, “The range of changes that photo editors can make varies from correcting background lighting to transforming a human model's body type. The technology and software available today allows amateur and professional photographers alike to alter their shots.” It goes on to say that some photo manipulation is necessary. Becky Olstad, a Photography Instructor at The Art Institutes International Minnesota, believes the use of Photoshop and other image manipulation software have become a routine part of the photography process. “It allows us to control exposure, contrast, color balance - things that are also routinely controlled in a traditional darkroom."

The new Code of Ethics adopted by the National Press Photographers Association Board in 2004, was updated and “modernized” as they termed it. The code has normal points, but one stood out that doesn’t seem to be followed a lot, especially with magazines involving fashion and fame. “Editing should maintain the integrity of the photographic images' content and context. Do not manipulate images or add or alter sound in any way that can mislead viewers or misrepresent subjects.” The fashion industry is a big user of photo manipulation. Photos have been manipulated to hide cellulite, love handles, veins, bags under eyes and so on.

This photo below of Jennifer Aniston recently caused a lot of commotion when Allure used it for the February cover. It was on my facebook feed so I clicked the photo and was shocked, along with a lot of others. Outraged readers fired back, commenting on one of the photos from the feature saying things like, "This is so bad, Allure you are really starting to suck,"; "Allure, I normally love what you do, but once I saw this picture (and the others from the shoot) I was shocked. It doesn't even look like her." Some wrote about the photos being creepy or fake, others complained about how photoshopped the shoot was. For more photos from the shoot, click the link.

An article by Cate Young, from the Boston University, BU Quad, Digital Manipulation in the Fashion Industry, says, “The fashion industry is notorious for it’s heavy-handed use of digital manipulation software, and has fallen under criticism for introducing ‘false images’ into the mainstream and passing them off as real.” Young goes on to say the industry is continually blamed for representing “unhealthy body images” by hiding imperfections. The article, Manipulated photo flap raises ethical issues, written by Nathalie Atkinson states, “The NPAA prohibits even the removal of undesirable objects or elements in photographs -- warts, zits and all.”

The fashion industry is under fire just about every week for something/ someone being photoshopped.

The "Plastic surgeons of digital media"
In the article, Picture Imperfect- Digital Image Manipulation Ethics, Fabio Apelbaum, a graduate from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, now a Director of Graphic Arts, believes Photoshop is used in almost all post-production projects and that it’s a good thing. “We happen to be the plastic surgeons of digital media. We will improve their defects but make sure to not exceed our rights as artists.” Apelbaum goes on to say, “When you look at a magazine, 98% of what you see in the fashion industry is unreal. We have taken the human beauty to an extreme that beauty itself cannot compete with."

Olstad believes the standard of beauty and other issues that have risen are not the responsibility of photo editors. “I don't think you can pin our society's unrealistic expectations of beauty on any one person or industry," she adds. "Isn't the designer who sends over only size 0's of the latest line just as responsible as the editor who prints the photo?"

If you are hiding things or disguising imperfections, it gives the viewer a skewed perception of what they are looking at and how they should be. It has created body and health issues, making people think they should “look” a certain way and caused confusion to consumers.

A new problem( or solution?) arises

With all the talk of photo manipulation one must realize that what you see is usually not what you get.

A new camera has come out by Panasonic that has beauty retouching modes. An article by Tobey Grumet, from stylist.com says, "Using built-in Beauty Retouch modes, this camera boasts the ability to tone down wrinkles, whiten your teeth and amp up rosy cheeks with just the touch of a button." The stylist crew did some experiments to find out that the camera produces a "younger, fresher and smoother" you.

David Briganti, senior product manager for imaging at Panasonic, says they wanted to create a camera with features that allow users to have fun with their photos. "Many photography settings need to be set prior to the photo being taken in order to see the changes, but with Beauty Retouch, these changes can be made after the photo was taken," said Briganti.

With the camera running about $230, it's an easy way to escape the expenses of more professional software BUT, is it a step in the wrong direction? It's nice to be able to correct small imperfections but with the way technology is going, are we doing more damage than good to our self esteem?

I recently read an article by Shaun Dreisbach, from Glamour about body image. Since I know a lot of girls with self-esteem and body issues, including myself, I thought it would be a good read. The article shocked me, but made me realize that something needs to change.

The glam squad did a survey with 300 women of all sizes that had to do with the thoughts and feelings that run through a woman's mind each day. The results were shocking:"Young women recorded an average of 13 brutal thoughts about their bodies each day"

Glamour did an experiment to find more alarming news."97% of women will be cruel to their bodies today." The experiment was extended to women across the country: record/ note every negative or anxious thought about your body in the course of one full day. The results came back with 97% having at least one, as Glamour put it, "I hate my body" moment.

A Cincinnati psychologist, Ann Kearney-Cooke, Ph.D., specializing in body image helped Glamour design the survey. "It’s become such an accepted norm to put yourself down that if someone says she likes her body, she’s the odd woman out. I was in a group discussion recently, and when one woman said, ‘I actually feel OK about the way I look,’ another woman scrunched up her face and said, ‘I have never in my whole life heard anyone say that—and I’m not sure I even believe you.’ That’s how pervasive this negative body talk is. It’s actually more acceptable to insult your body than to praise it," said Kearney-Cooke. This quote reminds me of the scene from Mean Girls where they all talk about how they have flaws while Lindsay Lohan says nothing. They look at her like she is crazy.

I don't think people realize how hard we all are on ourselves and the ones we love. I know when I was younger, I was called fat and told to lose weight and now it is always with me. I try not to worry about calories and enjoy what I eat but sometimes that negative body image kicks in. In the Glamour article it notes, "Nearly 63 percent of survey respondents said they had roughly the same number of negative thoughts as they expected. But few realized how venomous those thoughts were until they were down on paper."

"Our unattainable cultural beauty ideals, our celebrity worship—those all play a part," says Kearney-Cooke. I 100% agree with Ms. Kearney-Cooke, the image that is portrayed everywhere is thin, beautiful, clear skin, luscious hair, gorgeous body, etc. Even in other countries there are pressures to look a certain way. Take a look at this post from the blog Dressful. Eva ordered an issue of Vogue India to see what ideals were inside. She was shocked at what she discovered. There were multiple advertisements for skin lightening cream. There is a lot of pressure from magazines and beauty products to have lighter skin because as Eva put it in her post, "They believe dark skin is ugly and light skin guarantees more opportunities in life."

We can't hide from the fact that all countries, generations and ethnicities have pressure and body issues. Everything from "I have too many wrinkles" to " I'm too fat" run through people's minds especially women's'.

This next part saddens me to the point of worrying about kids I don't even have yet. It makes me once again think there has got to be a way to fix this body image issue. "In a University of Central Florida study of three- to six-year-old girls, nearly half were already worried about being fat—and roughly a third said they wanted to change something about their body."--- This tid bit from the Glamour article scares me. I want to have children one day BUT I want them to be happy, healthy and playful not worried about looks at such a young age.

Heartbreaking.

Something has gotta give here. We can't be passing our negative body image issues onto future generations.

So how do we fix this?

The article goes on to talk about, "Silencing your inner mean girl."

CHECK THIS OUT: "It’s worth it for not just the mental peace but your physical health as well. Research at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, suggests that women who obsess over their body and diet have chronically elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol (even when their life is not otherwise stressed)—and, as a result, may suffer from elevated blood pressure, lower bone density, higher amounts of unhealthy belly fat and even menstrual problems. “And this was among women in their twenties!” exclaims lead researcher Jennifer Bedford, Ph.D. “If you continue on this path, it could have a real impact on heart, bone and reproductive health 10 or 20 years down the road."- Glamour.

So to my friends, and the rest of you that really obsess over looks and weight... STOP. It's only hurting you in the long run.

Glamour came up with 7 things to turn your negative thoughts around.

1. Rewire you brain: My translation is, instead of listing the "CONS" about your body, list the "PROS!" There has got to be something you like whether it's your eyes, hair, whatever, choose something and go from there. Kearney-Cooke suggests "keeping a pen handy to note things you do that make you feel good about your body... Doing this puts positive stuff front-of-mind and starts becoming instinctive.”

2. Ask yourself: Is this negative feeling really about your body or is there something else causing the bashing.

3. Exercise: You will physically and emotionally feel better. If you set a goal of lifting a certain weight or running a certain distance and you achieve it, that will boost your self-esteem. Womenshealth.gov says, "Regular exercise has been shown to boost self-esteem, self-image, and energy levels."

4. Say "STOP!": If you have to, yell at yourself to stop the negative body image thoughts. I have done it a couple times and it helps. My boyfriend always corrects me too. If I say something negative, he will make me say "I'm beautiful" three times before we move on.

5. Remind yourself: Fretting over body issues doesn't get you anywhere. I recently heard a saying that I love, "Worry is the misuse of the imagination." So don't worry or obsess about the bad things, use your imagination and do something to create a better self-image.

6. Appreciate your body: Realize all the things it does for you. You can move around, explore, live because of your body. Be thankful you are alive.

7. Play up your strengths: Don't compare to others. I'm guilty of this but we all have qualities that are better than others. Someone might be "prettier" on the outside, but you could be prettier on the inside. Focus on the good traits you have and be proud of who you are.

We need to stop being so emotionally abusive to ourselves. If a significant other was saying such hurtful things, hopefully you wouldn't take it or maybe even get out of the relationship. People need positive reinforcements in their lives to believe in themselves and have a good body image.

In the end, we all have things we want to work on or fix about ourselves, but don't dwell on it. Just know you are unique and beautiful in your own way. The next time a negative idea pops in you head, say "NO! I am beautiful just the way I am."
